What does the poem mean to you? 

Faiz Ahmed Faiz is considered as one of the greatest poets of Urdu Language. He was from Pakistan. He spoke about love. This is just one of his many masterpieces.

donoñ jahān terī mohabbat meñ haar ke

vo jā rahā hai koī shab-e-ġham guzār ke

vīrāñ hai mai-kada ḳhum-o-sāġhar udaas haiñ

tum kyā ga.e ki ruuTh ga.e din bahār ke

ik fursat-e-gunāh milī vo bhī chaar din

dekhe haiñ ham ne hausle parvardigār ke

duniyā ne terī yaad se begāna kar diyā

tujh se bhī dil-fareb haiñ ġham rozgār ke

bhūle se muskurā to diye the vo aaj ‘faiz’

mat pūchh valvale dil-e-nā-kardā-kār ke

English Translation

Having lost out both the worlds in his love for you

Having spent a night of sorrow someone bids adieu

The tavern is forlorn the goblet flask too are blue

Now that you have left the days of spring have too

Leave to sin I did obtain but for days two and two

Courage of the lord divine is there for all to view

This world has caused me to forget all thoughts of you

The sorrows of subsistence are more deceitful than you

She did smile, by mistake, today at me anew

The joy of my dejected heart I cannot tell you
